One popular activity in the southern part of Thailand, especially in Trang, is the so-called Bulbul cooing contest. A wide area of land, preferably quiet, is chosen depending on the number of contestants ranging from 30-40 birds usually. The cages are hung about 2 metres above the ground. The winner is chosen according to the sweetness and duration of the cooing sound it makes. “Grong hua juk†is a word in the southern dialect used to call the Bulbul, commonly named “Parod lueang hua juk†(yellow bulbul with crest). They are long-crested colourful birds with a beautiful cooing voice. Dense orchards or gardens are the ideal places for them to live.
