On March 26, 1896 Ayutthaya railway station became the first provincial station to be visited by HM the King Chulalongkorn (known to Thais as King Chulachomklao—Rama V). His Majesty, who introduced the Thai railway system, travelled the distance of 71 kms. by royal train from Bangkok to Ayutthaya and came back on the same day. This has since been marked as a significant day in Thai history and the founding of the local railway system.
