Foot stomping in rhythm with song and music, with alternating sounds of playful laughter and firecrackers from afar, signal the coming of the New Year for the Lisu hilltribe people. To them this is regarded as a very important event. The celebration starts around the beginning of February when everyone dresses in colourful costumes. After the traditional ceremonies, they dance in intervals around a tree all day and night through the background music of instruments such as “namtaoâ€, lute or flute. The dancing movements depend on the rhythm of the music. It is usually the elderly who open the dancing floor in the morning. The young men and women have their turn from the afternoon onto the evening. This New Year celebration was recorded from the Lisu hilltribe village of Doi Lan, Tambol Vavi, Mai Saruay District, Chiengmai province. (Lisu is 1 among 6 hilltribe groups in the northern part of Thailand. They work hard, maintain solidarity and are straightforward people).
